Today is Equal Pay Day, which means women had to work all of 2017 and until this day in 2018 to catch up with what men earned last year alone. In the United States, women on average are paid 20% less than men—and Black women and Latinas are paid even less.

LeanIn are asking consumers to think about the impact of getting 20% less as they make purchases on April 10th, with e help of adidas, Lyft, P&G, Reebok and local businesses in more than 40 cities across the U.S. Their goal is to raise awareness of the gender pay gap and encourage companies everywhere to commit to equal pay. Because #20percentcounts today and every day.

For example, Lyft is transforming the cars in the app to unequal signs and asking passengers how they’d feel if their trip ended early (with 20% of the way still to go).

Imagine if you had only 80% of your regular groceries, 80% of the outfit you’re wearing to work right now, 80% of your lunch, 80% of your car? They’re over-simplified examples, but it can help to bring awareness to the things that we take for granted and how many people in the same roles are being paid less – or not able to reach higher roles – because of inherent biases.
